Cheating is defined as acting dishonestly or unfairly to gain an advantage in a game or exam. Cheating at exams is not something new or recent; it has existed for about as long as a system of education was implemented whereby a person had to pass an exam or answer questions on what that person had been taught. In previous times, cheating was relatively simple with the person just trying to glance at the person’s paper immediately in from of him or peeking sideways on either side. Just like other progressions, methods of cheating have also progressed mainly due to the advances in technology.
Instead of writing essays, papers and articles themselves, they usually copy them from websites which basically is quite easy. However, students who cheat do not think of what could happen in the future, or even what the consequences will be when they are caught. The most oft quoted reason for cheating in exams is the aspiration to pass the exam with good grades. This is usually the benchmark for academic success and acceptability for jobs or for higher studies such as obtaining a Master’s degree in some subject of even a doctoral degree gives them a better chance of obtaining the best-paid jobs.
Businesses usually need employees’ fresh out of college, but selection is basically done on their academic grades amongst other things. It is definitely cheating when a student contravenes rules and regulations that set up by the school or the examiner for appearing in an exam. The consequences of cheating can haunt a student for a long time. Some reactions may be immediate, such as being barred from appearing in any exam for a specific period of time, being demoted instead of being promoted, and the worst possibility being expelled from school. This not only affects the student’s academic career but could affect his/her career prospects as well.
Usually, students who cheat in exams get a bad reputation and are not trusted by other students, as they start to think of that student as someone who cheats and lies. Being labeled a dishonest person may even repercussions later in life when a person is applying for a job or is up for promotion and his or her past comes to light. Companies tend to bypass candidates who have the stigma of a cheat attached to them, with the thought that the person cannot be trusted to do his/her work honestly.
